Michele has taught at West Ghent School for over 20 years. She started as the three-year-old teacher in 1991. She has also taught the four-year-old class. She is now the teacher of the kindergarten/first grade class and director of the school. She has a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education with a minor in Psychology and a Masters Degree in Education. Michele is certified in New York State and the Commonwealth of Virginia to teach pre-school through sixth grade. Michele is also CPR, First Aid and PMAT trained. Her children are both alumni of West Ghent School.
Sharon has over 20 years of experience at West Ghent School. She has taught in the two and three year old classes. She has also done extended day. Sharon has completed over 30 credit hours towards Associates Degree in Early Childhood Education. She is also CPR and First Aid trained.
Kate has worked at West Ghent School for over 10 years. She has worked in some capacity in all areas of the school. This year she will be helping in the kindergarten/first grade class. Kate has completed all the state required training to be a lead teacher. She has studied sociology, anthropology, early childhood as well as other various studies. She attended West Ghent School as a child and both of her children have attended.
Allie is joining us this year as our music teacher. She graduated from Christopher Newport University with a Bachelor of Music Degree and is licensed in Virginia to teach K-12 music. She sings with the Virginia Symphony and is a soloist at First Presbyterian Church. She also teachers voice lessons at the Academy of Music.
Chris is joining us this year as our lead PE teacher. He has Masters Degree in Clinical Exercise Physiology. He came in as a guest PE teacher a few times in 2014-2015. He has been the fitness director at the Blocker YMCA and is currently working at CHKD.
Courtney has been a substitute teacher at West Ghent School. She joined us as one of the four year old teachers in 2014. She previously taught kindergarten in the Richmond, VA area. She has two daughters. One is an alumnus of West Ghent School. Her other daughter will be in kindergarten this year.
Jenny joins us this year as the lead teacher in the three year old classroom. She graduated from Longwood University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education, and she is licensed in the state of Virginia to teach Pre K through 6th gade. For the past three years, she taught first grade at Rawls Byrd Elementary in her hometown of Williamsburg, VA. She enjoys creating hands-on learning experiences for her students and helping them develop a lifelong love of learning.
Nancy has taught at West Ghent School for six years. She began as a
three-year-old teacher in 2005, and as the art teacher for the Kindergarten and first grade classes. She has taught the four-year-old class, as well as the art classes since 2007. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art from the University of Virginia. Prior to teaching at West Ghent School, she taught art at the Norfolk Department of Parks and Recreation (ages 5 to adult), and worked as a creative director and copy writer in advertising and marketing.
Beth Murphy is joining us this year in the four year old classes. She has been a substitute teacher at West Ghent School for the past four years. She has her Bachelor of Science Degree from ODU with a major in Occupational and Technical Studies and a minor in Marketing. She has 2 daughters, Clara and Maddie, that both attending WGS. Her husband Greg also attended WGS as a preschooler! She is an active parent and volunteer at Norfolk Collegiate school, is also a registered Yoga Teacher, and is an active parishioner at St. Andrews as a Sunday school teacher and children’s chapel volunteer.
Danielle is joining us as the two year old lead teacher and the PE teacher in 2014. She started as a substitute for us in 2013. She has a BS in Education. Her two sons have attended West Ghent School.
Laurie has over 30 years of experience at West Ghent School as an aide, teacher, and office administrator. She attended West Ghent School in 1961 and returned in 1977 as a teacher’s aide. Her two children also attended West Ghent School. She has taught at all the age levels. Laurie is also CPR, First Aid and PMAT trained. She was Joyce Jonak’s assistant, and took over as owner in 1994.
Ruth has worked at West Ghent School Since 2000. Before joining our staff Ruth taught in the New York City and Norfolk Public School systems. She received both her Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and her Master of Science in Special Education from Long Island University in 1980 and 1984, respectively. She is licensed to teach in the State of New York, City of New York, and holds a certificate to teach in the State of Virginia. In 2005 she earned her Level 1 certification in the Wilson Language System and in 2010 trained in the Wilson Language System Level 2. Ruth is a member of the International Dyslexia Association.
Mary Bradford White
Mary Bradford started working at West Ghent School from 1999-2005 and rejoined our staff in January 2014. She is one of the assistants in the three year old class. She studied liberal arts at Virginia Wesleyan College and she also attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. She has completed training hours through the state for our required licensing information.
